William & Mary Equestrian's Response to Recent Protests and #BlackLivesMatter
The William & Mary Equestrian Team and Club fully support the Black Lives Matter movement and condemn the extrajudicial murders, racial profiling, pervasive oppression, and systemic racism that make the demands of this movement so urgent. We would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, David McAtee, and every other individual that has unfairly died at the hands of law enforcement officers. In the words of James Baldwin, “Ignorance aligned with power is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.” A badge is not a license to murder.
Equestrians, especially college equestrians, are a hyper privileged group. In addition to being predominantly white, we generally have additional privilege conferred by access to education and affluence. As such, it is our responsibility to amplify BIPOC voices and take a stand in solidarity with BLM and related protests. We are fully committed to the anti-racist cause and we intend to individually and collectively weaponize our privilege in order help create a more just and equitable future. The fight against racism is one that offers no sideline—to be silent and inactive on this front is to be complicit in the perpetuation of white supremacy.
We call upon William & Mary to undertake the same commitment and enact meaningful changes in order to address the college’s racist history and make our school a better, safer, more welcoming place for our BIPOC students. We call upon other equestrian teams and organizations to break their silence surrounding this issue and back up their words with actions—use your affluence and privilege to contribute to the fight and directly redistribute resources where they are truly needed.
Our plan for change:

Our plan for change:
- Promote BLM by sharing educational resources and places to direct donations
- Share the ways in which our members are making a difference
- Reorient our community service to address racism and the effects of structural violence in alignment with the intentions we set with this statement
- Collaborate with other groups at W&M to make our school and our community a better place
